Untouched nature reserve in the north-west part of lake Helgasjön.

You can only reach this nature reserve by canoe or boat, or by walking over the ice on the winter, since it is an island. This makes Galtö so well-preserved, so untouched. The island has rocks on the sides, polished by the ice sheets, and a coniferous forest. When it comes to flora and fauna there are a lot of lichen, moss and mushrooms in the reserve, but also many flowers, birds and insects.

The reserve was founded in 2008 and is situated in the large lake Helgasjön in the northern part of Växjö. When it comes to birds, you can spot osprey, Eurasian Hobby and Black-throated diver, if you are lucky. However, what really defines Galtö is the moss. An example of species of moss that you can find here are greater whipwort, leucobryum moss and lanky moss, among many other. Apart from that, you can also find the plants water lobelia, tufted loosestrife and European bur-reed, but also a kind of Norway spruce growing on the ground instead of up into the sky, also grows here. This fantastic, unusual species richness is possible since Galtö has been left unspoiled. The dead wood on the island is perfect for the insects who live there. You can walk on the island and also go swimming during the summers.
