The church was finished in 1854 and was built with a big and light interior. The altar piece, painted by the well known church artist Johan Christian Zschotzscher, and the pulpit are from an earlier medieval church located 1 km to the east.
The church, which is from 1854, is in traditional "Tegnérladetyp", which means "Tegnérs farm-style", with its large, light room. The altarpiece, painted by the often hired church painter Johan Christian Zschotzscher, and the pulpit were a part of the old medieval church, which was situated one kilometer from Öja Church. The parents, grand parents and other relatives of author Pär Lagerkvist are buried in the cemetery. The church was reinaugurated in 2012 after some extensive interior restorations.
